What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is how you get recommended inside AI answers. Learn what GEO is, how it differs from SEO, and how to implement it.
What Generative Engine Optimization actually is
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your business the answer that AI assistants — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews — hand to a buyer who is ready to act. Instead of competing for a blue link in a list of ten, you are competing to be the single named recommendation inside a generated answer.
How GEO differs from traditional SEO
SEO optimises for a ranked list: keywords, backlinks, and position. GEO optimises for retrieval and citation: whether a model can find clear, specific, verifiable statements about what you do, who you do it for, and why you are the safe choice. Rankings are a proxy metric. Being recommended is the outcome.
The four levers that move GEO
Entity clarity (one consistent description of your business everywhere), evidence density (specific numbers, named outcomes, dated proof), structured markup so machines can parse your claims, and third-party corroboration on the sources models already trust. Get these four right and you show up in answers you never ranked for.
Why it matters now
Buyers increasingly ask an assistant instead of scanning a results page. When the assistant names three vendors, positions four through ten no longer exist. GEO is the practical framework for being one of the three.
